Chase Maujean

Chase Maujean

Let me introduce myself my name is Chase Maujean, I am a professional horseracing jockey in South Africa. I am based in Gauteng but i am originally from Durban. I travel around South Africa riding in races. I am also a lightweight jockey. I am hardworking, honest person (sometimes too honest in gets me into trouble) with that said I am also a very shy person & a big family man. My dream is to become champion jockey.

I started my career very young when i entered the academy at 15 years old under the guidance of my riding masters Mr Vincient Curtis and Mr Paul Gadsby, my first ride was on 2 August 2003 at Greyville aboard a horse named Vaalie, my first winner was on Popular Soul a 66/1 shot. I do not try to emulate any other jockeys' style i choose to use my only style but with that said as an apprentice i look up to Anton Marcus.

Garth Puller took me under his wing he saw potential in me and made me see it, he taught me a lot of things not just in riding but in life of racing which i still use today in my riding i am forever grateful to him for everything he did for me.

In my early career I was based in Durban where I battled a bit getting rides, then in one year I went on holiday with my wife and daughter to the Vaal to see my in-laws, I got a couple of rides and did well on them I was then offered a job by Mr Louis Goosen, i made the move to Johannesburg where my career started to take off. I then struck up a partnership with Lucky Houdalakis where I rode many winners for him but my best win for him would have to be winning the Ipi Tombe Challenge aboard Demanding Lady.  I have ridden for many great trainers and have had wins for them in Johannesburg, namely Geoff Woodruff, Dorrie Sham, Johan Janse Van Vuuren, Paul Peter & Fanie Bronkhorst to name a few.

I then started to travel to Port Elizabeth where I struck up a great partnership with Tara Laing and Gavin Venter, we became more than just trainer & jockey partnership we became family, I still ride for Tara in Port Elizabeth, and we have had great success together. I have had other success in Port Elizabeth with other trainers to name a few Gavin Smith, Alan Greeff Duncan Mckenzie, Jarque Strydom & Kelly Mitchley.

I must also thank the owners for their continued support of me. I have made some great friends with owners, Mr Laurence Wernars has always supported me & is a good friend.

I have had many winners to date and I have won a lot of feature races as well, grade 1s, grade 2s, grade 3s and many Listed races, as well as i have ridden in the July. The most memorable win would have to be winning the grade 1 with Juxtapose for the late Stanley Ferreria. My favorite horse well there are too many, but I would have to pick Singapore Sling for owner David Shawe who went on to Singapore.

I have also had a lot of ups & downs through my career as well as “knock on Wood” injuries, the worst was when I broke my Femur.

I am now sponsored by Indigo Health Supplements, and I use their products which I must say with the high demand of my job and injuries their products have really helped my body and mind get back to the best it has felt in a long time.

To end off I would like to part some advice ride out the hard times, keep your head done work hard, strive to do your best and always be humble you are not bigger than the game.
